An interactive browser-based software tool with which Internet users are able to find information of interest to them.

The standard search engine interface consists of a string (field) for input search queries, under which are located search results in the form of names website pages with attached links to go to them, as well as brief descriptions of their contents (snippets).

Search engines perform their functions using:

  • search robots, that are carried out site indexing - analysis of the contents of their pages and entering the processed information into the search engine database (cache);
  • search algorithms, that determine the degree relevance the search query entered by the user on the web resource page;
  • filters, who monitor the quality of the websites in the cache and the “legality” of their promotion in the search engine.

Search engines form their own issues at the request of users using the principle ranking - the arrangement of search results depending on the relevance of the information contained in them and their authority (weight).

In almost all modern search engines, there are additional search options for images and videos contained on the web resource pages, as well as for news and maps.

The most popular today are search engines Google and Yandex.
